Meet "Anam Cara" our beautiful traditional barge
Anam Cara" is a very cosy 40 ft traditional barge, that has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Barges are flat bottomed boats that were used from 1780 to transport cargo and people to and from Dublin. Originally, barges were pulled using horse power. Luckily Anam Cara has acquired an engine since so you won't have to start coaxing horses if you want to go somewhere!
Barges are now lived on and are homes of choice for a large number of people. The barge community is very active and friendly; don't be afraid to say "Hi" and stop for a chat if you pass anyone along your voyage!
Anam Cara is the perfect barge to rent. She is tastefully decorated in a way that will make you feel at home instantly. A barge holiday is a great way to relax and enjoy Ireland's canals and waterways.
A look at the outside...
As you can see, Anam Cara is mostly enclosed. The enclosed sections are the living quarters. At the bow (front) of the Anam Cara there is a lovely area to sit out on while the barge is navigating the canal. Call dibs on this spot to read a book or spot the local wildlife.
The stern (back) of the boat is for the skipper! Here is where the driving is done from. A tiler is directly connected to the rudder which gives the skipper a real feel of how the boat is reacting to his/her instructions. A lovely table can be placed here to capture the sun while having a bite to eat.
Let's have a peek inside...
Anam Cara is a very cosy barge. She has a beautiful wooden interior which gives a great sense of warmth to the space. A clever layout leaves relatively spacious interior.
There is counter top space to prepare food on which can then be cooked on the inbuilt gas oven. The gas oven includes grill and hobs. Basic cooking equipment is provided and there is a bright airy shower room which is located beside the pump-out toilet.
There is a" dreamy" comfortable double bed which opens to give magnificent views of the night sky. The living area turns into a second double bed and there are two other narrow single bunks.
Anam Cara is most comfortable when sleeping 2-4 people.
Other bits you might like to know...
Anam Cara is heated by a beautiful wood burning stove. A small amount of fuel will be provided to suffice for the first few nights of your barge rental.
Candle light is the light of choice on the barge. Electric lights are available but limited battery capacity restrict their long term use. Candle light creates a relaxed and romantic setting! A stock of candles are also provided on board.
Bed linen, towels, crockery, pots, pans and essential supplies are on board and included in the rental. Starter pack tea and coffee etc on board.
